Geometry Class Syllabus - 2014-2015
Welcome to WHS Geometry class! The study of space and the objects in it goes back thousands of years, yet new objects and relationships are still being discovered today. We will explore some of the oldest mathematical accomplishments as well as some revolutionary ideas that are relatively new. We are I am looking forward to a fun-filled year of hard work and plenty of learning. Should you need to contact your teacher, please do not hesitate to call, write, email, or stop by.
Materials: All students will be required to bring the following supplies to class everyday:
Pencil Textbook 2” 3-ring Binder Highlighter
Lined Paper Composition Notebook Graphing Calculator Positive Attitude
Post-its Colored Pencils
Please pick these items up as soon as possible so we can get started!
Things that you can leave outside of your classroom are food, drinks other than water and gum. I will confiscate these materials and they will not be returned until the end of your Teachers school day and at their earliest convenience. Technology welcome although if used for personal use it will be taken away and brought to the front office for pick up at the end of the day.
Binders: It is expected that you have a binder that you can bring to class everyday. You do not need a separate binder for the class, just a section in an existing binder. Your “Assignment Record Sheet” should be the first sheet in your binder, before any divider. The dividers should be:
For example: A = 90-100%, B = 80-89%, etc.
The grade breakdown for each Quarter will be based on the following:
Assessments (Tests, Quizzes, Projects)
Homework
Modeling/investigative Tasks/Class work/Binder Checks
Your grade will be based on the following:
Average of Quarter 1, 2 & 3 grades = 80%
Semester Final (given in December and May) = 20%
Homework: For the most part homework will be given every night. Students will be graded on both correctness and completeness, so make sure to do your best and try ALL the problems assigned. It is expected that students do their homework on lined binder paper that can easily be turned in for grading. Homework will be returned to you the class period after it is submitted. Furthermore, homework will only be graded that has been done in PENCIL. Please write each assignment at the top of the page of binder paper. I will provide you with red pens to correct your homework and then collect them again.
Quizzes: Quizzes are given on a regular basis and will normally be announced in advance. Quiz values will vary depending on the number of questions asked.
Tests: Tests will cover material learned in class and will usually follow a teacher-led review session. However, it is the responsibility of the student to study the appropriate material and for the necessary amount of time.
Expectations: All students are expected to comply with all rules and regulations established by WHS. Our classrooms are a place for learning and we will expect all students to respect that. Should a problem develop, appropriate actions will be taken. Our expectations are as follows:
o Be on time (you are tardy if you are not in your seat when the bell rings).
o Come to class prepared to work; bring all necessary supplies, including a positive attitude.
o Complete any and all assignments to your best ability. Because we are available outside of class, our expectations for completeness and understanding are high.
o Record all assignment on your “Assignment Record Sheet”.
o Be respectful and responsible for your own and the learning of others.
o If you need assistance, please raise your hand and avoid calling out.
o Should you need to use materials that I have available during class (ruler, pencil sharpener, etc.) please ask for permission and return them in the condition that you found them.
o Please use the bathroom, drink water, and sharpen your pencil before class begins.
Be tenacious – You are intelligent. You can do this. Your family pays a lot of taxes to make sure you get an education. Make sure they get their money’s worth!
Δ-o-Ο: Triangle-Square-Circle (TSC) - JOURNAL
This will be a reflection part of your notes as well as a nightly homework assignment. As a summary of your notes you will write 3 things I am taking away from this lesson (Δ), 1 thing that is square in my mind, that I understand well from today (o), and 1 thing that is still circling around in your head, a question you still have (Ο). You are required to post your TSC on Collaborize (This will be due by midnight that day) or within your notebooks (depending upon your teacher) the same day that you have the class. .
Absences: When an excused absence occurs (i.e. doctor’s note, parent permission, etc.) it is the responsibility of the student to make up any missed class work, homework, and/or test/quiz within two class days of returning. A parent note is required on the day of your return in order to receive credit.
Tardy Policy: You are tardy if you are not in your seat when the bell rings. You can be tardy three times before I will call home and you must serve a lunch detention.
Bathroom Policy: You will be given eight bathroom passes to be used during the entire year. Should you lose yours or use all of them be sure to go before class.
